On the Job Hunt: What to Do When You Feel Stuck
When looking at the job application process, we tend to focus on the tangible items we’re creating – the details of the resume, the tone of the cover letter, and who to ask for references. After that, we jump right to interviews, focused on answering every question with precision. But what about in between? It can take time to hear back after you hit “submit” on a job application. And, even when you do, it’s possible you’ll get several rejections before you’re offered an interview. The process can be slow and stressful, and there may be times you feel lost and overwhelmed.
If you’re feeling stuck, it’s perfectly normal. Those of us currently in the workforce have all been there – searching for a job post-graduation and unsure of what to do next. The good news is, if you do feel stuck, there are many things you can do. Whether you’re waiting to hear back on submitted applications, feeling discouraged by a rejection, or just unsure of the process, there are some simple things you can do to get back on track and ensure you’re headed in the right direction.
Polish Your Resume
It’s a good idea to keep your resume as up to date as possible. Add recent skills and experiences and delete any outdated or irrelevant ones. Make sure to comb through your resume for any errors. Get a fresh pair of eyes on it by asking a friend or professor to look it over. It can be easy to miss things, and you want to give the best first impression you can to a potential employer.
Update Your Online Presence
In the same vein as polishing your resume, it’s important to keep your online presence updated, as well. This might include your LinkedIn profile and/or any sites or portfolios linked on a job application. Again, and for consistency, add recent skills and experiences, and make sure your profile photo is professional and up to date.
Network
Don’t stop networking. Attend a career fair. Email companies you’ve applied to, letting them know you submitted an application. Connect with a career coach. Reach out to connections who work at companies you’ve applied to. Contact people in your network, letting them know you’re on the job hunt and asking for their advice. The more people are aware that you’re looking for a job, the more opportunities, advice, and help you’ll get.
Set Goals
Keep looking forward to that job. Don’t stop applying, and don’t stop researching job positions and potential employers. Think about your must-haves, the specific things you’re looking for in a job or company. Set goals for where you want to be in the next couple months, whether that be a number of applications submitted or job fairs attended, and take concrete steps toward those goals.
The bottom line: don’t be afraid to ask for help. You’re not alone — so many people have gone through this before and they’re willing and able to help you. Don’t give up, keep pushing forward, use your resources, and you’ll get there.
