Women’s Interview Attire: Accessories
We’ve talked about the interview suit, so now let’s talk about what goes with it.
As with the suit, your accessories should be as non-distracting as possible, both to yourself and your interviewer. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear any accessories, but you should be aware of how they can be perceived.
If you fidget with your jewelry, take care to choose pieces you won’t fiddle with, or omit the type of jewelry that is the main offender.
In addition, you should ask yourself the following questions:
- Are your earrings larger than a quarter?
- Are you wearing more than one ring per hand?
- Do your bracelets jangle against each other?
If you answered “yes” to the above questions, double check your jewelry is appropriate for an interview.
One more decision that should be made before your interview: purse or portfolio. Trying to bring both takes up too much space and can make shaking hands awkward. I prefer a neutral-colored portfolio to keep a few copies of my resume, a notebook and pen, and any identification I may need.
If you opt for a purse, make sure it’s in decent condition and a close match to the color of your shoes. The best option for shoes is usually close-toed pumps with a one or two inch heel.
All of these are merely tips. Don’t forget to do research on the company and job you’re applying for. Depending on the company culture, your jewelry could lean toward the more traditional or funkier side. When in doubt, ask the recruiter what would be appropriate. But remember, feel confident in what you’re wearing because it will translate to your attitude.
