As a 2019 college graduate, it wasn’t long ago that I was in many of your shoes: applying for my first “real” job. It’s an exciting process. You’re imagining which company will kick start your career, where you’ll apply everything you’ve learned in school, and where you’ll start the next chapter of your life. Since this experience is different for everyone – and can be a little stressful – I wanted to share mine with you.

Throughout my job search, I spent countless hours researching companies, submitting application after application. I was happy to put in the work to find a position that motivated me with a company that believed in me. Those things were very important to me and I knew I wouldn’t settle for less. I interviewed with several companies, but none seemed to be the right fit. After so long, I became nervous I wouldn’t find the job I was looking for. So many of my friends were accepting positions and I feared I was being too picky and running out of time.

Eventually, I came across a new job opening at Reynolds and Reynolds; and I was immediately interested. After doing my research, I knew they were an extremely established, reputable company with a solid culture. It was exciting to find a company that aligned so well with what I was looking for in my first job out of school.

As I moved through the interview process, it only became clearer this was a company I wanted to work for. I could tell very early on they invest in the people they hire and don’t take hiring decisions lightly. One of the biggest things I saw then – and every day since – is Reynolds’ belief that people make this company great. I was nothing short of excited to receive a job offer from Reynolds after working with such a helpful recruiter, having great conversations in my interviews, getting to know the role, and meeting my future co-workers. Although it took some time, it was worth waiting to find a company I felt was a good fit for me.

As you continue your own job search, here are a few takeaways I learned from mine:

There is no set timeline on getting your first job. This was hard for me to remember because I always felt like the clock was ticking and time was running out. Remember… it’s not. The timing of job postings can differ depending on the position you’re searching for, as well as the company or the industry you’re applying in. Just because your friend secured their “dream job” before you, doesn’t mean you won’t find yours. It means that job is still out there and you need to put in the time to find it. Make sure you regularly check our careers page so you don’t miss an opportunity that could be right for you.

It’s ok to be selective. It’s even encouraged. This means you know what you want in a role and what you want out of a company. The interview really is a two way street. They are interviewing you for the job, but you need to make sure the company is a good fit for you too. I encourage you to do your research and be ready to ask good questions during an interview. This will give you a better understanding of Reynolds’ company culture, as well as show the interviewer you’ve done your research and are interested in the company.

Leverage your resources. One of the best ways to learn about a company is through their website.
