Finding Summer Work in May
Ideally, by springtime, students and recent graduates have a job lined up that builds credibility for their desired career. However, life, school, or other responsibilities can get in the way of sealing the deal.
So if you don't have a job offer by May, what’s next?
The first key thing is to keep pushing forward. If you haven’t found your job/internship yet, keep looking. Some people will decline offers and the positions will take more applications, or new ones will be created at the last minute. Keep your resume up-to-date in case an interesting opportunity becomes available.
If your financial situation demands you find employment immediately, apply for jobs that have easily transferrable skills. For example, being a waitress/waiter would allow for you to provide examples of teamwork, customer engagement, communication skills, and so on. Most retail and food service jobs are always hiring, and there are lots of takeaways you could use to help build your portfolio.
The next important piece of the job-search puzzle is self-reflection. Have you been struggling to land interviews? If so, review your resume, or have another person look at it. Having a good resume is essential to getting the call to interview. If you are getting interviews, but not receiving the response you desire, attend a mock interview or practice with an expert in your field. They can help provide tips to ace your first impression, and hopefully get you the next position you apply for.
Most importantly, know you aren’t alone. There are many other people who are still looking for seasonal employment and haven’t found their niche.
