No one is immune to afternoon drowsiness. In fact, a popular energy drink company has built its marketing strategy counting on you to have “that 2:30 feeling” during the work day.

But, before you reach for something to give you a caffeine rush – coffee, tea, soda, or an energy drink – know that a quick fix actually can make your fatigue worse in the long run. Consider these pick-me-ups instead:

  1. Take a walk. Taking a five or ten minute walk around the building or your work area will get your blood moving and energize you enough to keep those yawns locked behind your lips.
  2. Do some light stretches. Doing some arm crosses and toe touches will loosen you up and get you focused back on work. We have a few suggestions for exercises that can also help you release some tension.
  3. Eat protein and drink water. Protein is burned slower than other nutrients so it stays in your body longer and gives you a steadier influx of energy. Eating protein-rich foods such as peanut butter crackers, mixed nuts, or beef jerky, can give you an energy boost. Dehydration also saps your energy, so it might be a good time to refill your water bottle too.

Next time you feel your eyelids getting heavy and your vision starting to blur, try one of these options first. You’ll find you’re more refreshed and ready to focus on what you need to do.
