If you’re someone who enjoys computer programming with a focus on solving problems and creating a better client experience, a career as a software developer may appeal to you. To learn more about what that work entails at Reynolds, I spoke with Amanda R., an applications developer in the Reynolds office in Birmingham, U.K.

Tell me about your life, education, and work history before Reynolds.

I studied Physics and Astrophysics at The University of Birmingham and then worked for several years as a senior analyst at a large accounting firm. When I realized I wanted to delve further into programming, I found my way to an entry-level opportunity at Reynolds.

What made you want to join Reynolds?

Two things: a company willing to train me in a programming language in which I had no experience, and a good starting salary. I found that, whilst the interview process seemed quite rigorous, it was really noticeable how friendly and encouraging everyone was.

Describe a typical work day. What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of the role. It’s really satisfying to translate an idea or solution into actual code.

I have some flexibility over the projects I work on each day, so long as I’m tackling high-priority projects first. That suits my work style and helps ensure I’m giving each project my best effort.

What I’m working on can vary from troubleshooting to making system modifications to creating new programs. There’s usually some research required into what might be causing a problem or how to implement the requested modifications. Then, I’ll code any necessary changes and test the software.

It definitely feels like an achievement when you’ve successfully completed a tricky project. In fact, that’s probably what has surprised me most about this position; I don’t think I realized it was possible to truly enjoy my work until I came to Reynolds.

What do you like most about working at Reynolds?

The people. From day one, I felt like part of a community, even with people I had never met before.
