From Barn to Business: How Reynolds Believed in Me
The following post is from Marketing associate Emily S., who started her career with Reynolds after a unique upbringing.
I graduated early, ran my own livestock operation, and helped my family run its grain and livestock operation. But, no company would hire me – except Reynolds.
I was beginning my senior year in college and was searching for a position that would fit me. After a long journey of submitting resumes, I realized my lack of work experience was holding me back.
Sure, I had internships to strengthen my skills in marketing, but the fact I help run a grain farm and livestock operation was often overlooked in interviews – almost being mocked.
It was different when I walked into Reynolds.
The interviewer understood I was young, but she also was quite impressed with the number of internships I was able to complete while being overloaded on credit hours. Yet when she stopped the interview after reaching the bottom of my credentials, I thought, “Here it is, she read I have an agriculture background. I should just pack up.”
To my surprise, she asked question after question about my livestock operation, family life, and what it was like to grow up on a farm. She was really interested and hired me on the spot for a marketing internship over the summer. She complimented me on the hard work it takes to run a successful farm and told me she was excited to work with me in the future.
After shocking the entire marketing department with the different agriculture-related points I explained to them, my internship came to an end. To my surprise the recruiting staff asked if I would like to join the marketing team full time and I, of course, accepted.
My teammates and boss are interested in learning more about my life outside of Reynolds and could not be more supportive of the unique lifestyle I lead.
Bottom line, no one found the good in what I was proud of, except Reynolds. That is why I love working for this company as much as I do; they believed in my abilities and gave me a chance.
I will be forever grateful for the amount of respect I was given in a corporate world I was told I couldn’t fit in. No matter where someone comes from, Reynolds finds the good and gives chances to those just starting out.
